The Story Behind Sovereign Warrior Bison Jerky

Community

Sovereign Warrior began in Darby, Montana, when Yasmeen and her husband Lance decided they wanted to build a business together.

They came to it with very different but complementary backgrounds. Earlier in her career, Yasmeen worked in the natural foods industry, but food, nutrition, and natural living have been part of her life for as long as she can remember. Over the years, she watched the natural foods industry change. As "natural" became more mainstream, many of the standards that originally defined the movement began to erode. Ingredient lists became longer, sourcing became less transparent, and products marketed as healthy didn't always reflect the same values or quality that had drawn her to natural foods in the first place.

Lance came from the startup world and brought a different skill set, the business, strategy, and entrepreneurial side. They knew they wanted to create something together that combined their strengths, they just didn't know exactly what that would be.

Where It Started

The opportunity came when they connected with Creekside Bison Ranch, a local bison ranch in the Bitterroot Valley. They loved bison as a nutrient dense, uniquely American protein, and saw an opportunity in a category they felt could be done differently.

So much of the jerky available was highly processed, made with conventional meat, and filled with ingredients that didn't reflect the way they ate or the standards they valued. They believed they could make something better.

They started Sovereign Warrior with a commitment to exceptional bison and ingredients they would actually use in their own kitchen. They developed their recipes from scratch, focusing first and foremost on flavor while refusing to compromise on the quality of the ingredients behind it.

What Goes Into Every Bag

Today, their whole muscle jerky is made exclusively with 100% grass-fed and grass-finished bison from Wild Idea Buffalo Company. Wild Idea's bison live on the native grasslands of the Great Plains, and their commitment to the animal and the ecosystem aligns deeply with the direction Yasmeen and Lance want to take Sovereign Warrior.

Their bison bites continue to be made with bison from Creekside Bison Ranch, the ranch that helped spark the idea for Sovereign Warrior in the first place.

They pair that exceptional meat with real ingredients like fresh garlic, ginger, herbs, peppers, organic juices, raw honey, and thoughtfully sourced spices. Everything is made in small batches in Montana, which allows them to stay intentional about what goes into every recipe.

Their relationship with Wild Idea has also allowed them to take their sourcing standards even further. This year they introduced Aegean, their first jerky made with Regenerative Organic Certified® bison. For Yasmeen, regenerative agriculture represents an important part of where the natural foods movement needs to go next, not simply asking what is absent from our food, but looking at how that food is produced, how animals are raised, and how the land is affected in the process.

A Bigger Purpose

As Sovereign Warrior has grown, their purpose has become bigger than making a better bag of jerky. Yasmeen and Lance believe our everyday choices have power. What we choose to eat, how it's produced, how animals are raised, how land is cared for, and where we choose to spend our dollars collectively shape the food system around us. That's the idea behind a phrase that has become central to their brand: Your choices are the revolution.

Sovereign Warrior started in the Bitterroot Valley, and they're now preparing for their next chapter with a new production facility and flagship shop in Missoula. As they grow, they want to continue pushing toward higher standards, better sourcing, better ingredients, thoughtful new products, and food they're genuinely proud to put their name on.
