At the Co-op, ensuring the safety and well-being of our shoppers is our foremost priority. With this commitment in mind, we want to inform you about a potential food safety concern related to bulk walnuts under investigation for potential E. coli contamination. Here's what you need to know:

The product in question is bulk organic walnut halves and pieces (PLU 1451) sourced from "Gibson Farms Inc", distributed between October 1, 2023 – April 24, 2024. As of now, there have been no confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to any products sold at the Co-op.

We were notified by our distributor about this voluntary recall on Monday, April 29. At that time, we did not have the impacted lot number on hand. Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately discarded the product and sanitized the affected bins and scoops.

On Tuesday, April 30, we were notified that our store was shipped walnuts with the affected lot number at some point during the dates listed above.

Please discard any bulk walnuts purchased at our Co-op between October 1 – April 29. As recommended by the FDA, we urge you to sanitize any container you used to store these walnuts.

The FDA recommends contacting your healthcare provider if you think you may have symptoms of an E. coli infection after eating organic walnuts. If you consumed the affected product recently and are experiencing symptoms of an E. Coli infection, we recommend contacting the Gallatin County Health Department at 406-582-3100.

Visit the FDA website for more information on this recall: https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/gibson-farms-voluntarily-recalls-organic-light-halves-and-pieces-shelled-walnuts-because-possible

To receive a refund for any discarded product, please email [email protected] or call 587-1919 ext. 8. For any concerns or questions about the recall, please contact the company at Veronica Cheatham 831-637-3512 or email [email protected].

Your safety and satisfaction remain our utmost priority.

Product Recall

We implement a product recall when a formal recall has been issued.

We learn about these formal recalls by receiving email alerts for all new recalls, and we monitor the FDA website to ensure we’re aware of anything that has been recalled. In addition, all of our vendors are told to report any problems with a product as soon as they are known.

After learning of a product recall, we immediately remove the product from our shelves. We post signs in our stores to notify our customers and we post a recall notice on our website.
